Is Dual Booting or Virtual Machine is best for Asus ROG Strix?
I am an Asus Rog user. I too had this doubt for a long time. my work required Linux-based OS but Asus Rog comes with Windows OS. well I guess you too have this same dilemma so I thought of sharing my insight.
Note: This documentation is based on my experience. so please treat this as an experience review. if you are an expert/professional in this matter please do share your insight or opinion as comments.
laptop specification:
ASUS ROG Strix G15 (2021) Ryzen 9 Octa Core R9–5900HX — (16 GB/1 TB SSD/Windows 10 Home/4 GB Graphics/NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050/144 Hz) G513QC-HN126T Gaming Laptop (15.6 inches, Eclipse Grey, 2.10 kg)
well let’s get started with the facts, ROG is a gaming laptop which means it is all about graphics, processor, memory. its true ROG can support both dual boot and VM .
Dual boot is efficient and needs only fewer resources to run and less power of course. but doing Dual boot in Asus Rog is complicated and not much recommended unless you are good at troubleshooting errors related to the operating system level. if you need dual boot Linux apart from your windows OS then there are a lot of driver level precautions you need to take because dual booting may cause some trouble related to BIOS and graphics drivers for Asus ROG.
On other hand, Virtual machine is heavy and consume extra resources along with resource required to load your primary OS but are less complicated to set up and does not cause any driver level errors
so in my personal opinion assuming that you are an average troubleshooter then I recommend using a Virtual machine instead of a Dual boot.
There will be another question coming into your mind like is it safe? how will be the performance? any heat issues? can you work for 24hrs in VM? does it affect performance?
well, the answer is Virtual machine works excellent in Asus ROG it’s safe. performance is very good and healthy so far, of course, you can work with VM 24 hrs there are no heating issues reported or experienced for me so far. if you are using VM for testing and coding purposes then performance will be excellent and no lag or no performance error reported so far.
I am recommending using VMWare workstation PRO for setting up VM.
Quick summary, Use Virtual machine instead of Dual booting in Asus ROG. it safe and less complicated and performance will be good if your machine specification is good.
